Salam,
I looked up the fiqh on fortune cookies online, but found nothing in sight.

Until then, I am convinced that what you read from a fortune cookie is truly a sign from Allah. :-)

keep it halal yo.

Should have looked at that "fundamentals of tawheed" book, lol.

Fortune cookies are a kind of divination, and if any prediction is realized it is by pure coincidence.

"Whoever does tiyarah (good/bad omens, the way the bird flies) or has it done for himself, has his future prophesied, or has someone bewitched is not one of us." - Al-Husain

"No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except according to what was written prior" 57:22

Allah has said: “say none in the heavens nor the earth knows the unseen except Allah”.

"The Salaah of whoever approaches a fortune-teller and asks him about anything will not be accepted for 40 days and nights."(Muslim) The punishment in this Hadeeth is for simply approaching a fortune-teller and asking him questions out of curiosity.

"Whosoever approaches a fortune-teller and believes what he says, has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad. "

Allaah said: "With Him are the keys to the unseen and none knows it except Him alone."

I think this is minor shirk because you are putting your trust in something other than Allah. Now what if the fortune cookie said something bad, wouldn't that influence you?

Therefore, Muslims must take utmost care in dealing with books, magazines, newspapers as well as individuals who, in one way or another, claim knowledge of the future or the unseen.

    Salam,
thank you anonymous. What I did read however, was more vague than just a prediction of the future. If anything, it reminded me to Allah. If I shared the statement with you, you would understand =)

Most fortune cookies, in fact, don't tell fortunes; at least in the way that is meant fiqh-wise. Messages like "keep your enemies closer", "the greatest danger could be your stupidity", "life is not a struggle, it's a wiggle", "you are not illiterate", etc. (these are all real ones), do not constitute divination as Mr(s?) anonymous defines it. Rather these are more along the lines of advice and motivation. So fiqh-wise these kind of messages DO NOT constitute haram, and are not along the same lines as horoscopes, etc. which have the explicit purpose of telling you your future. I'm going to take a wild guess that the fortune you got said something like "your sparkle will never fade". This is not divining your future, it's turning your frown upside down. The little things in life that uplift our spirits are hedayat from Allah. We shouldn't be so quick to slap the label of haram.

hahahahhahahahah kashraqi, i swear that wasn't the "fortune" i was referring to in my blog; only if I was such a teeny bopper as to get excited over my "sparkle"

kashmiraqi, those may not be telling your fortune, and wouldn't be considered under what I said in my last comment. But still, the majority I've seen say vague stuff that might happen to you in the future. I will email an alim inshAllah and see what he says.

one again fortune cookies aren't supposed to predict the future. they're just motivational statements. Of course, the Quran is the best source of motivation. regardless, its ok to lighten up just a little sometimes and have a cookie!
